We’re supporting our client, a leading manufacturer based in Elkhart, Indiana who are looking for a CNC Setup and Repair Technician to join their growing team. The successful CNC Setup and Repair Technician will have 2-3 years of experience in CNC machine setup, operation, and repair in a manufacturing environment.

As a CNC Setup and Repair Technician, you’ll be responsible for setting up, operating, maintaining, and repairing CNC machines to produce precision parts per engineering specifications. This role demands technical expertise in CNC setup, familiarity with programming, machine repair, blueprint interpretation, inspection processes, and specific machine functions, including machine setup, auto functions, mid-auto functions, restart function, manual functions, mid-auto/manual functions, program editing, zero set-functions, and tool offsets. The technician will also perform advanced repair and maintenance tasks to ensure machine reliability and performance.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Perform machine setup by installing and adjusting tools, fixtures, and attachments per job requirements.
  • Execute zero set-functions to establish accurate reference points for machining operations.
  • Set and adjust tool offsets to ensure precise machining and compliance with specifications.
  • Load and unload materials, ensuring proper alignment and secure placement.
  • Operate CNC machines using auto functions, mid-auto/manual functions, restart function, and manual functions to produce parts efficiently.
  • Perform test runs to verify program accuracy and make necessary adjustments.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with the Okuma control panel, including the coordinate system, program editing, and identification of M & G-codes.
  • Input and edit CNC programs to meet part specifications, ensuring accurate machine setup and operation.
  • Adjust machine settings (e.g., speed, feed, offsets) to optimize performance and ensure part accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot machine and part programs to resolve operational issues and ensure consistent output.
  • Perform advanced repair and maintenance tasks, including but not limited to: Change drive belts to maintain proper machine operation, Repair conveyors to ensure smooth material handling, change oils and filters to support machine longevity and performance, level machines to ensure accurate machining, change various switches to restore functionality, repair 3-jaw chuck and collet nose to maintain secure workpiece holding, adjust turret index speed for optimal performance, align turret, headstock, and tailstock to ensure precision, and align and troubleshoot barfeed systems to ensure reliable material feeding.
  • Perform routine maintenance on CNC machines, including cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs.
  • Diagnose and report complex equipment malfunctions to supervisors, coordinating with maintenance teams as needed.
  • Read and interpret technical blueprints, drawings, and work instructions to determine setup specifications and machining processes.
  • Properly document inspection, production, and maintenance results as required.
  • Demonstrate proper use of inspection equipment, including micrometers, calipers, comparators, and height gauges, to verify part compliance with tolerances.
  • Inspect finished parts to ensure adherence to quality standards and document results accurately.
  • Identify and troubleshoot machining issues to maintain quality and efficiency.
  • Read and comprehend ISO policies, procedures, and work instructions as they pertain to the CNC Department.
  • Ensure all activities align with ISO standards and company quality protocols.
  • Work closely with machinists, engineers, quality control, and maintenance teams to ensure efficient production and machine reliability.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, quality, and equipment performance.
  • Train and mentor junior operators as needed.

About You:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in CNC machine setup, operation, and repair in a manufacturing environment.
  • Blueprint Interpretation: Must demonstrate the ability to read and interpret blueprints and properly document results. Test administered by Quality Manager.
  • Inspection Equipment: Must demonstrate proper use of micrometers, calipers, comparators, and height gauges. Test administered by Quality Manager.
  • CNC Proficiency: Must possess knowledge and ability to demonstrate proper use of the Okuma control panel, including coordinate system, program editing, zero set-functions, tool offsets, M & G-code identification, and machine setup. Must demonstrate proficiency in auto functions, mid-auto functions, restart function, manual functions, midi functions, and troubleshooting machine and part programs. Must pass CNC Setup and Repair Evaluation with a score of 85% or better.
  • Repair Skills: Must demonstrate ability to perform repairs, including changing drive belts, repairing conveyors, changing oils and filters, leveling machines, changing switches, repairing 3-jaw chuck and collet nose, adjusting turret index speed, aligning turret/headstock/tailstock, and aligning/troubleshooting barfeed systems.
  • Ability to read and comprehend ISO policies, procedures, and work instructions as they pertain to the CNC Department.
  • Familiarity with a variety of materials, including metals and plastics.
  • Must show within 30 days (per union contract) the mechanical ability and dexterity required to perform setup, operation, and repair duties effectively.
  • Attendance: Attendance is of prime importance. Consistent and reliable attendance is critical to success in this role.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to produce high-precision parts within tight tolerances and perform accurate repairs.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot machining and equipment issues and optimize processes.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and meet production and maintenance deadlines.
  • Teamwork: Collaborative mindset with excellent communication skills to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to production and repair needs.
  • Experience with Okuma lathe machines with live tooling is preferred.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles or Six Sigma methodologies is preferred.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems for production and maintenance tracking is preferred.
  • Prior experience in CNC machine repair or maintenance roles is preferred.
