Product Design Engineer – Job Summary:
We’re supporting our client, a leading ventilation company based in Caerphilly, who are looking for a Product Design Engineer to join their growing team. The successful Product Design Engineer will have experience of rotating machinery using electric motors, fans and blowers.

Responsibilities:
- Design and develop new products which are safe, legal, and compliant while also striving to deliver best-in-class performance.
- Always adhere to the team’s project management methodology and work collaboratively with the team on projects from start to completion.
- Always adhere to established and documented new product introduction processes.
- Provide support and technical expertise to ensure existing product ranges remain compliant, updating them accordingly where necessary.
- Technically support internal and external customers (Some occasional visits to customer sites in the UK and overseas may be required).
- Responsible for engineering the innovation and optimisation of new and existing mechanical designs.
- Creation and maintenance of all technical product documentation; including items such as CAE models, costing data, technical construction files, bills of materials, technical specifications, test data etc.
- Maintain currency of knowledge with all mandatory legislation, relevant codes of practice and appropriate building regulations which are relevant to activities.
- Ongoing review and optimisation of product designs to identify and implement cost savings and performance improvements. This includes keeping up to date with core industry technologies and advancements.
- Applying appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis and solution of engineering problems.
- Always adhere to good engineering practice as well as good time planning, management, and control.
- Developing expertise in at least one relevant area such as sheet metals, injection moulding, acoustics, controls systems, mechanism designs, kinematics, fan law, design optimisation, design automation and parameterisation, etc
About You:
Essential:
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline with focus on engineering design.
- Experience applying appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis and solution of engineering problems.
- Experience of working in a project team environment.
- Ability to know when to work independently using initiative and when to consult seniors and other colleagues.
- Expertise in at least one relevant area such as sheet metals, injection moulding, acoustics, controls systems, mechanism designs, kinematics, fan law, design optimisation, design automation and parameterisation
- Proficient in CAD tool such as Autodesk Inventor for 3D and 2D modelling.
- Innovative in thinking with the ability to effectively communicate new ideas with justification from first principles.
- Able to build good working relationships with colleagues and customers.
- Good organisation and time management skills.
- Good verbal, writing and presentation skills to communicate with all levels of stakeholders.
- Experience of IT packages including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel or equivalent.
Desirable:
- Working knowledge of rotating machinery using electric motors.
- Working knowledge of fans, blowers.
- Theoretical knowledge of FEA and CFD.
- Previous experience of Research and development concepts such as Design of Experiment, systems characterisation, design, modelling, simulation and optimisation.
- Experience with creating cable and harness and wiring drawing.
- Working knowledge of Harmonised standards and European directives for safe, legal and compliant product design.
- Previous exposure to relevant national and international standards (BS 16484 series, BS7000 series, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 etc).
- Commercially aware with the ability to explain technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
- Experience of working in an Agile, PRINCE2 or similar structured project management methodology team.
- Knowledge of HVAC sector, ventilation, or construction manufacturing markets.
- Willingness to occasionally travel to customer and /or sites mostly within the UK and rarely overseas.
