Purchasing Manager – Job Summary:

We’re supporting our client, a leading manufacturer of assemblies, components and parts for leading truck manufacturers based in Des Plaines, IL who are looking for a Purchasing Manager to join their growing team. The successful Purchasing Manager will have experience of working in Purchasing function within a manufacturing setting required, including but not limited to component part purchasing and sourcing, MRP systems, inventory metrics, and supply chain improvements.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct and coordinates the activities in purchasing raw materials, packaging, supplemental parts, freight, and supplies with our domestic and international supply base
  • Manage and lead our commercial relationship with our strategic suppliers to achieve year over year improvements in cost reduction, inventory turns, supplier service levels, and payment terms.
  • Visit suppliers and conduct business reviews, strategic purchasing discussions, and identify cost savings and innovation opportunities with both domestic and international suppliers. Estimated travel will typically be 25% to visit local/domestic suppliers, with potential for at least one international trip per year.
  • Conduct high-level and detailed negotiations with suppliers to drive down total acquired/landed cost, payment terms, or service levels/lead times to optimize our overall value
  • Lead strategic sourcing efforts to establish an alternate supplier portfolio that will ensure supply contingency plans are in place and prevent supply interruptions
  • Develop and implement purchasing management policies, procedures, and tactics to ensure highest level of efficiency for the purchasing function
  • Utilize in-depth knowledge of and experience in procurement processes (category management, strategic sourcing, contract management, supplier relationship management, and spend analysis), organization, and related technology required.
  • Ability to effectively lead Purchasing and other support team members. Capable of overseeing transactional part of the function including assigning the work tasks and willing to back up team members as required.
  • Convert forecast and historical information provided by sales and operations into right-sized purchase quantities and optimized inventory and stocking levels
  • Coordinate with Logistics on inbound freight, including international shipments and customs clearance, while identifying the most cost-effective freight solution
  • Negotiate and create transportation and freight forwarder relationships and contracts to ensure the lowest delivery cost and optimum service levels
  • Collaborate with suppliers, engineering, production, and quality to drive successful launch of a product on time and at or below cost to our customers
  • Compile, generate and disseminate various purchasing or supply chain key performance indicators, reports, analysis, and tasks as assigned and/or required

About You:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working in Purchasing function within a manufacturing setting required, including but not limited to component part purchasing and sourcing, MRP systems, inventory metrics, and supply chain improvements. Experience that includes international supplier management and logistics is very strongly preferred. Candidates with experience working with international suppliers and resulting purchasing activities on a regular basis will be given consideration over those without international experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain, Economics, or Engineering, or relevant degree is required
  • Strong exposure to cost and payment terms negotiations, and supplier relations is required
  • CPM, CPIM, or other related purchasing or supply chain certification a definite plus
  • Strong analytical skills and use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint) to go to very detailed levels on costs, numbers, metrics, etc., is mandatory, and strong ability to present to senior management required
  • Bilingual capability is a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills are essential
  • Strong interpersonal skills and change management experience are required
