Tool Designer – Job Summary:
We’re supporting our client, a High-Quality Custom Roll Forming Manufacturer based in Louisville, KY who are looking for a Tool Designer to join their growing team. The successful Tool Designer must be familiar with CNC programming and the die manufacturing process as it pertains to CNC lathes, vertical mills, and wire EDM machines.
Salary: $80,000 – $120,000

- Typical work hours and shifts: 1st shift – 7:00 a.m. through 3:30 p.m.
- Days of week – Monday – Friday
- Overtime and Saturday work may be scheduled and required. This is a rare occurrence, but this person must be flexible enough to stay late should something come up unexpectedly, or should the company’s fluctuating workload increase to the point where more than 40 hours per week are required to keep up
Responsibilities:
- Using a CAD system, designing and drawing various dies, fixtures, equipment:
- Flying cut-off and pre-notch dies for roll forming lines.
- Pre-notch feed dies, some with gagging.
- Piercing and forming post operation dies
- Side fixtures for roll forming lines.
- Miscellaneous fixturing
- Large and small custom machines
- CNC Programming & utilizing CAM software.
- Lathes, vertical mills, and wire EDM machines
- Supervision of the tool and die department and the CNC department.
- Coordinate with head of engineering/owner to monitor productivity, track attendance and PTO, monitor and manage various tooling projects and assign labor accordingly to meet deadlines, etc.
- Assist production with problems concerning tooling or programming that are encountered during the manufacturing process.
About You:
- Minimum 8 years’ experience in flat pierce and progressive dies
- Minimum 8 years’ experience with a 3D CAD system is a MUST. We use Kubotek’s Keycreator
- Must be familiar with CNC programming and the die manufacturing process as it pertains to CNC lathes, vertical mills, and wire EDM machines.
- We prefer an individual who has had a lot of experience with the new varieties of CAM software. We use FeatureCam
- We do not necessarily require a degreed engineer, if the amount and type of experience is adequate
Success Factors:
- Ability to multi-task.
- Detail oriented and organized.
- Willingness to “get your hands dirty” every once and a while. During tool tryouts our design engineers spend a lot of time on the production floor communicating with toolroom and production personnel while diagnosing tooling problems. Because we are a non-union shop, we can be very efficient in this way.
- Any experience laying out wiring diagrams and programming PLC’s and motion controllers would be a plus.
- Ability to communicate and work with a variety of positions, from production personnel to toolmakers and CNC operators, to the head of engineering, to whom this person will report directly.
- Ability to comply with company attendance and safety policies.
