Multiskilled Lead shift Engineer – Job Summary:
We’re supporting our client, a well-established packaging company based in Rotherham, who are looking for a Multiskilled Lead shift Engineer to join their growing team. The successful Multiskilled Lead shift Engineer will have experience of working in the FMCG sector and both mechanical and electrical abilities.

Responsibilities:
- Ensure plant, equipment is maintained in a safe and optimum operational condition capable of producing products in the quality and quantity required to satisfy customer requirements.
- Develop a continuous improvement working environment and culture.
Safety
- Ensure that best practice in Health and Safety is at the core of all decision making. All work that is carried out by yourself and persons under your control will follow the site Health and Safety procedures, so all personnel are protected from associated risks.
- Continually contribute to the overall improvement of the Health and Safety standards of the site and foster a drive to positively change the culture of persons under your control.
- Comply with CDM regulations with all tasks that involve external contractors. Ensure that all pre-requisite documentation and planning of the tasks is completed, so a thorough control of contractors is coordinated before commencement of work. Ongoing management of contractors whilst on site to ensure they are fully compliant with all procedures and methods raised from the site risk assessments.
- Fully engage in looking for Health and Safety hazards and actively coordinate the resolution of the hazards with the management team. Be involved in all accident investigations where applicable to actively help to provide optimal solutions from an engineering perspective.
- Foster a strong relationship with the Health & Safety Manager and work closely to improve the site standards and culture.
Management/ Supervisory
- Lead the multi-disciplined shift engineering team.
- Prioritise workload for the shift engineering team.
- Actively monitor production status across site and make the necessary decisions based on that.
- Lead the shift handovers from the previous shift and to the oncoming shift. Ensure all information is logged in CMMs (Agility) and passed over.
- Actively monitor and use CMM’s (Agility) to look for and assign work to the engineers on shift to ensure labour utilisation is optimised.
- Raise any queries of concerns immediately to the Engineering manager.
- Form good working relations and work closely with production shift managers.
- Ensure any downtimes are minimised and enforce the escalation procedure to assist this.
Engineering, Maintenance and Projects
- Ensure that best practice in Health and Safety is at the core of all decision making. All work that is carried out by yourself and persons under your control will follow the site Health and Safety procedures, so all personnel are protected from associated risks.
- To ensure that the integrity of the machines that you are responsible remain at the highest standard with the machines capable of running at optimal outputs at all times. All checks are fully completed and verified, all calibrations are completed in the correct frequency, all reporting and management of machine defects are followed through to completion.
- To stand in and adopt the duties of a fully competent Electrical or Mechanical shift engineer, in the event of absence of your engineering shift members i.e., holiday cover.
- Ensure the planned PPM schedules are fully achieved on all machines with maximum focus in reducing the downtime. Help organise the crews, so we are actively aiming to reduce downtime on PPMs time but achieve full adherence to the PPM schedule list.
- Have an excellent understanding of the site machinery and develop strong relationships with the Conversion & Engineering team so that effective solutions can be implemented to improve productivity. Work closely with the machinery suppliers to gain best practice knowledge.
- Ensure appropriate stocks of critical spare and key components are kept and easily identifiable so the most expedient fixes can be completed on the machines.
- Forge a strong relationship with the other engineers so full flexibility in preparation of PPM schedules are executed on time in full. Have a proactive attitude in trying to reduce the time of PPMs but maximising the quality of maintenance.
- Be actively involved in any meetings that relate to productivity improvements or Health and Safety.
Measure of Effectiveness
- Full compliance to all H&S procedures.
- Full adherence of CDM when controlling contractors and projects on the plant & outside grounds.
- Achieve 96% utilisation of the plant.
- Full adherence of the PPM schedule and all defects closed out through the Cell Teams.
- Full completion of Personal Development Plans for all your direct reports. Increase the skill base year on year in line with technological demands.
- Engineering Costs to come in under budget including overtime costs.
About You:
- Qualified in a Mechanical or Electrical Discipline to a higher level (HNC Level 4, Ideally Level 5).
- Fully competent in both Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
- Plus 3 years’ experience in the Corrugated Industry or FMCG Industry is preferred especially involving modern high-speed Corrugators but is not essential.
- Good knowledge and experience of health and safety regulations and working practices.
- People management experience ideally a team of multi-disciplined engineers and practical experience in supervisory/managerial capacity.
