We’re supporting our client, a rapidly expanding an engineering and manufacturing company with specialisations in kettle controls, small domestic appliance connectors, bimetallic safety cut-outs and motor protectors based in Buxton, Derbyshire who are looking for a Shift Manager to join their growing team. The successful Shift Manager will ideally have experience of working with high-speed automated equipment.

 

Position Overview: As a Shift Manager you’ll ensure that all products are manufactured on time and to the required quality standards. Your primary focus will be providing support and guidance to all personnel involved in manufacturing operations on your shift, as required. To work within Legal, Quality Health, Safety and Environmental controls.

 

Responsibilities for Shift Manager:

  • Undertake such training as required by your supervisor or Manager and to assist in the training of others.
  • Ensure personnel of adequate calibre are available in sufficient numbers to meet objectives.
  • Ensure that staff appraisals are carried out in accordance with Company Policy.
  • Identify the training needs of members of your team.
  • Ensure adequate equipment and facilities are available to enable staff to function effectively.
  • Provide leadership and management of the team, whilst respecting the hopes and aspirations of each individual.
  • Communicate all aspects of Company policy accurately.
  • Create and maintain effective relationships with teams, supervisors and other work-based contacts.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of product and service quality.
  • Ensure that your actions and the actions of other individuals do not compromise the legal requirements and safety standards.
  • Perform your duties in accordance with the Company Manual and other departmental documentation, such as Work Instructions or Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Recognise the value of the Company’s resources that are used in the course of your work.
  • Conduct yourself in accordance with the policies set out in the Company Rule Book.
  • Comply and ensure that your staff comply with the requirements placed on you/them by the Safety Management System and the Environmental Management System.
  • Take an active role in the management of the business and perform activities within key operating targets as detailed in the Business KPIs and personal Appraisal Form.
  • Carry out any reasonable request from any member of the Management team within the general scope and purpose of the job.
  • Plan production schedules, taking into account material, labour and equipment availability, ensuring that the RLIP date is the target date and, where this is not possible, the CLIP date will be used.
  • Use OEE and Lean Manufacturing methodology as the basis for planning and implementing continuous improvements. Measure and reduce the 7 Wastes (•Transport •Inventory •Motion •Waiting •Over-Processing •Overproduction •Defects) and record and analyse all areas of waste such as scrap, rework, waiting time, tool maintenance, machine maintenance and job time etc. Resolve process issues to reduce waste and improve cycle times.
  • Implement and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in all areas. This will incorporate any quality, environmental and H&S requirements for each process. Review, audit and check on a regular basis to ensure that these SOPs are up to date and adhered to at all times. Ensure that all production, quality, H&S and environmental records are stored for traceability.
  • Discuss any proposed machine modifications with the Senior Management Team.
  • Ensure that all breakdowns are dealt with promptly and efficiently with the minimum machine downtime.
  • Record requests for spares or services that cannot be acquired and report these to the Production Manager.
  • Ensure that staffing levels are adequate to achieve shift targets through liaison with the Production Manager.
  • Ensure staff are trained to the required standard and inform the Production Manager of requirements. Identify areas of training and development and ensure that escalated Return to Work interviews are conducted as part of team development.
  • Ensure all staff carry out their duties in accordance with the Company Rule Book and their job description at all times.
  • Develop, monitor and implement training plans in line with maintenance, setter and operator requirements. Ensure that training plans are adequate and consistent with other shifts.
  • Ensure that 5S is implemented throughout the Company and that regular audits are performed to help drive continuous improvements.
  • Liaise with Internal Customers and Internal Suppliers to ensure that everything we do is customer focused and aimed at giving our External customers on time delivery.
  • Ensure that all your staff are appraised at least once per year and are aware of the Business KPI’s and that their contribution to the business is recognised.
  • Provide technical assistance in the resolution of quality problems i.e. internal and external complaints and incorporate ‘Poka Yoke’ wherever possible.
