LinkedIn – How does this help my job search?

LinkedIn, a social media platform that focus’ on the professional world, is building momentum and is often dubbed as the ‘Work Facebook’. It may seem a bit foreign to the older generation, and anyone isn’t too fond of being active on a social platform, but it is significantly improving many people’s chances when they are job hunting.

LinkedIn opens conversations, introduces connections and is a good newsfeed for individuals and industries.

There are certain things that need to be adhered to with your LinkedIn profile that can significantly improve your chances of being noticed. We believe that the below list should help you boost your profile.

1. Have a profile picture on your account.
– This should be a clear image of your face, looking both smart and professional. Avoid posting group pictures, as it will be harder to confirm who you are, or any pictures that show you intoxicated, as this can give off the wrong impression.

2. Keep your profile up to date.
– If you do any new qualifications or complete any job roles make sure this is noted. Any potential employers will then be able to see what you have been working on and what you are qualified for (and if any of these qualifications are valid).

3. Get yourself involved.
– The main point of LinkedIn is as a social media, so comment on posts with discussions, reach out to the people who could potentially help you. This could keep your profile active and higher on the list of searches.

4. Make connections with people!
– Link your profile with old work colleagues, tutors/lecturers that you had in college and university, fellow students, friends, and family that are on LinkedIn and people who are in the same industry that you are wanting to work in.

5. Announce yourself.
– If you are connecting with people you don’t know, send a message with the connection explaining who you are and why you want to connect with them. This will help give a good impression when reaching out.

6. Don’t leave anything off your profile!
– Go into as much depth, with descriptions, as you can about what you’ve done. List your skills / expertise / professional qualifications, anything that you have achieved since education. You will have more influence with potential employers if your profile is bursting with information about you and what you have accomplished.

7. Use your headline.
– At the top of your profile there is a section that you can leave a quick sentence saying who you are and what you want to achieve. This is almost like a blurb about you and what you are looking for.

8. Let people know that you are available and looking for potential roles.
– On your profile picture there will be an option for you to showcase that you are ‘Open for Work’.

9. Try to link up with professional groups that are in your desired field.
– This could link you up with potential company. By going on these groups, you will be able to find more opportunities and also be able to be active in conversations that could get you noticed.

10. Be proactive!
– If you have applied for a role and have achieved an interview or are interested in a particular company, then start following the company and connect with as many of the HR department or the department managers you would look to join. You will be able to see their interests, which could start a discussion during your interview, or it could help your application process.

Hopefully some of these tips will help you with your LinkedIn journey.
